Size Means Nothing; Fit Means Everything

Let’s talk about the difference between size and fit.

All of us have a unique shape, size and fit. We’re all different and that’s a good thing.  Understandably we would all love to be able to see clothing we’re interested in on a body exactly like ours, whether it’s a smaller size or a plus size. Wouldn’t that make things so easy?? Take a look at the women around you right now. Every single one of them is a different size, shape, height and proportion. It’s impossible to show every body type without creating an entire encyclopedia of women’s bodies and show how a garment fits on every single one. One of our goals for this year is to show more sizes and bodies so that it’ll be easier for you to assess your perfect fit.

Show yourself some LOVE!

Society needs no help when it comes to damaging women’s self esteem regarding body image. But there’s a lot you can do to change this! Meet that woman in the mirror with a smile. Tell her she looks adorable, cute, sexy, and amazing! At the end of the day when it’s just you and the mirror, a choice is made about the words used to describe ourselves, to ourselves. Cut yourself some slack and give some words of encouragement and love to that amazing person looking back at you. It’s time to think about your clothing size like you think about your shoe size. It’s just a number that corresponds to the length of your feet. Why not?

Live it now!

When you put on your clothes and they fit right, you know it. It’s not just about having it go over your body or being able to do up a zipper or a button.  Armholes that don’t gap and the way a garment flows over your body is key. It’s that dress or skirt that hits that magic spot on you and makes your legs look amazing.  When your clothes fit properly you look and feel like you can take on the world. It’s not about waiting until you’re the size you want to be it’s about looking and feeling your best Right Now!

Give yourself that gift!

Won’t be long…new Fall arrivals are starting to trickle in now!

New Styles & PrintsIf you’re at all curious about what’s coming… here’s a peek at a few new retro dress styles and all the adorable vintage inspired prints they’ll be coming in. We have to say we’re especially excited about some new choice prints this season. Many are ‘out of this world’ !! Wink wink..nudge, nudge. Yep, you guessed it there are quite a few with a celestial theme. Others involve movies, entertainment, and science for all you geeks out there! Of course, there are some beautiful fall florals and diminutive dots, too. So many new prints….cats, birds, donuts, travel and (a bit later in the season) more skulls!

The ‘New’ Annette Dress

If you’ve been a fan way back to our early years (over 5 years ago now!), you may remember the original Annette Dress. We’ve brought her back for Fall and switched her up a bit. This time she features a very full, crinoline worthy skirt and slightly puffy sleeves. We’ve kept the pretty scoop neckline, piped collar and open back detail. She’s a darling in new prints this time around, and all with contrast piping. We’re swooning over The “Ex’s” print with adorable yellow piping…

The Marie Dress

Just to switch things up we’ve moved the zipper from the back to the front, and what a boon for your office to party transformation! It’s all in your control…prim and proper for daytime or Va Va Voom for the evening! You get to choose!

We named the Marie dress after a famous female scientist to celebrate all our smart women customers out there. Marie features a shirt style collar, short slight puffy sleeves, a full skirt and of course, POCKETS! Here’s a peek at the special prints we choose for this dress. We have to say though, these photos do not do them justice…they are truly amazing!

You’ve Got A Friend In Me

Sneak peek of some new Doris dresses coming soon!

If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that everything is so much more fun with a friend. Think of shopping and what do you think of? Hangin’ with your bestie! Vancouver is filled with so many beautiful souls who rep our dresses so well and we are so lucky to know two lovely ladies that stand out not only as gorgeous Cherry Velvet models, but incredible friends with a magical bond.

Seeing Veronica and Erin model together, you can tell that these two girls really “get each other’s crazy” (as Erin so aptly puts). Veronica is Samwise to Erin’s Frodo…Lilo to her Stitch…Ron to her Harry…We could obviously go on.

Models by day, Fangirls…always!

From Disney obsessions to Simpson References, these cuties are the perfect example of kindred spirits. Friends since 2006, they both met acting for a local playhouse – quickly bonding over assorted geekery and a shared passion for performance.

Just like true sisters (from different misters!), not only was Veronica one of Erin’s Elven bridesmaids for her themed wedding, but they’ve also supported each other in things like auditioning for the same role in a local production of “The Graduate”!

Cherry Velvet followers will already recognise Veronica as one of our favourite models, so it’s only fitting that she inspired Erin to connect with us as a model shortly after she became an official Cherry Velvet Girl.

Awhile back, we had the pleasure of shooting with these charismatic chickies for our Spring 2017 Lookbook. But between the impromptu singalongs and all the face pulling, we couldn’t help but feel like we were all hanging out like old friends. You definitely see how much fun these girls love to have.

…but when it came to lights, camera, action, these Princesses of Poise knew how to turn it on!

“Together, we are… The ULTIMATE Plus Model!…” Veronica exclaimed.

“…She’s the T & I’m the A! Whenever we go lingerie shopping we always joke that she can’t find anything to fit her boobs, while I can’t find anything to fit my butt!” Erin added. (It’s adorable how they finish each other’s sentences.)

She also points out that they both love the Retro aesthetic and it was a dream come true to get the same chance with us that Veronica had. After seeing her in our dresses, Erin realised she wanted a chance to model dresses that were as unique as her. “It’s nice that curvy girls get to wear fun patterns and feel great!”

All it took was faith & trust (…and a little bit of pixie dust) and here she is!

As they slipped into this season’s gorgeous dresses, they commented that our pieces fit like a glove whether you’re an “Erin” or a “Veronica”.

Our straps are designed for comfort and support, so Veronica never has to worry about anything other than stopping traffic! No bra-strap slippage here. And Erin loves how our dresses nip at the waist so perfectly. Identifying as “pear-shaped”, she was delighted at how our fun and full skirts accentuate her curves without resorting to uncomfortable body hugging.

Veronica nodded knowingly, “I honestly feel like they’re cut and designed so that women can actually wear them.”

Well, hey! We can’t argue with that, can we? We just love the classic dress silhouette!

It certainly was an adventure with these daring Gryffindors & we hope you enjoyed this little glimpse at the unique people who help bring Cherry Velvet to life!

Why Fashion Shouldn’t Be Fast

As the gifting giving season rapidly approaches, we want to take a moment and address an issue that is seriously affecting both consumers & retailers…”Fast Fashion”. This is a term coined to describe a current trend in fashion, aimed at ensuring that consumers buy as many garments as possible, as frequently as possible. With the rise of online retailers such as RoseGal and Dresslily, that sell their garments at ridiculously low prices, consumers have come to expect these prices without the thought of the consequences.  But are these garments truly a great price? We want to explain what Fast Fashion really means and why it’s too good to be true.

full_29293

With cheap and rapid overseas production allowing some retailers to release styles weekly, Fast Fashion’s goal is to make the consumer feel out of style after the first few wears. Yes, that dress may be $20, but there might easily be 100+ dresses to purchase by the end of the season. It’s not much of a deal if you feel obligated to buy every week, just to feel on trend.

980x

Which leads us to another point – Fast Fashion is literally designed to fall apart about as quickly as it’s purchased. Retailers know that if their garments fall apart, it will give the consumer a reason to purchase something new. Deliberately poor quality/low grade fabrics are not only dishonest but also lead to much unneeded waste, with an estimated 68 lbs of textiles per American finding its way into landfills each year.

landfill

These cheap materials often include chemicals such as petroleum & heavy metals like lead. In addition to being potentially harmful to your health, these materials take decades (at the detriment of our environmental footprint) to decompose. In short, by participating in Fast Fashion, you are guaranteed an inferior piece of clothing.

dye

If that’s not enough to deter you, we would be remiss not to address the ethical repercussions of supporting Fast Fashion. In addition to cost-cutting measures like poorly graded Plus Size designs (or excluding Plus sizes altogether) Fast Fashion also manages their bottom line by contracting factories overseas that do not have and uphold employment standards like here in Canada. This leads to extremely unfair wages and poor working conditions, in addition to the illegal use of “informal workers” that work from their homes in some of the poorest regions of the world. This unfortunately also includes children; Children whose small fingers are more cost-effective for companies to employ, than purchasing the expensive machines required to sew on embellishments such as beads and sequins. In fact, if you purchase a relatively inexpensive garment with beads and sequins, they were almost certainly sewn on by children.

For Cherry Velvet, we simply cannot participate in a trend like this. When we say we are Retro/Vintage inspired, we aren’t only referencing the unique prints and style of our dresses. We truly believe in the old fashioned mentality of being careful and deliberate in designing. We want our Regular and Plus Size dresses to echo the days where fashion was all lovingly patterned and graded by hand and a dress had good structure and a long lasting quality behind it.

Unless you’re purchasing from a company that is transparent about where and how they manufacture their garments, you can’t be sure that you’re purchasing guilt-free, quality clothes. It is a little-known fact that many outlet stores (Like Winners, TJMaxx, Marshall’s, to name a few) do not actually sell a brand’s out of season pieces or excess stock; In actuality, an outlet’s broker deals with large brand names, in order to put their designer labels on the cheaply made clothing manufactured in their own low-quality factories.

garbage

We hope that this “insider” information has helped educate on the global effect that Fast Fashion has on the global community and industry. It’s time we all slowed down and made a conscious decision to be more thoughtful about what we wear.
