Addressing Your Bust; Bra Fit for Dresses

Fitting your bust in a great dress starts with a well fitting braWe must, we must, we must ad”dress” your bust!

An appropriate and well-fitting bra is really important for building the “foundation” of your shape under a dress. Make sure your bra straps are adjusted so that your bust is supported correctly (you know how the straps can stretch out!). When you put on one of our dresses, your bust should sit above the waistband. This will make the dresses look and fit better and should eliminate your breasts being cut in half by the waistband. Yes ladies, lean forward, adjust your breasts up and over the band and then complete the pulling up of the zipper. Much like when you put on a bra.

“When you go dress shopping please wear a great fitting bra! A sports bra or no bra just doesn’t cut it to get the best fit”

Under Where?

What you wear on the lower half of your body is totally your preference. Our Cherry Velvet dresses have extra room across the tummy to give you enough room that it’s not necessary to wear anything special on the bottom. It’s totally up to you! We are a big fan of being able to look great AND breathe!

Find your Best Fit; Cherry Velvet style

When you place an order with Cherry Velvet, we want you to be thrilled when you receive your dress because it fits like a dream! We care about this so much that we’re doing a series of blog posts filled with tips and short videos to teach you how to find your best fit. We’ve noticed that measuring and proper fit are often not talked about enough. Many of us are just so happy to find some pretty clothes in our size that we don’t give fit the consideration it deserves.

Unfortunately, there is no industry standardization when it comes to sizes. The dress you bought at another company could, and will likely, be a completely different size than the one(s) you buy from us.  You can ensure you get your correct Cherry velvet size by either trying on our dresses in person at one of our retail locations (all of our retailers are listed on our website and we certainly encourage you to support them if you have a store nearby) or by following a few simple steps when ordering online at cherryvelvetplus.com—it’s that easy, we promise!

To get your best fit in a Cherry Velvet dress, the first thing we recommend you do (after choosing your dress style) is to measure yourself. Here’s a short video on how to do it (below):

Once you have your measurements, you can compare them to the size chart on our website. If you’re still unsure, simply send your measurements to us at cherryvelvetplus@gmail(dot)com, along with your dress(es) selection. The Cherry Velvet team will then measure the dresses for you and compare those numbers to your measurements. We’ll then let you know if the dress(es) you selected will fit and recommend a size to order or, perhaps, make a suggestion on a dress style that will fit better. This method produces excellent results! We’ve had many happy customers receive a dress that fits great the first time—and we want that same experience for you, too!

Happiness is a dress that fits and makes you look and feel fabulous!

P.S. Our video shows you how to measure for the majority of our dresses like the Brigitte, Doris, Brooke, Chrissy, Danielle etc. Our next blog in this series is how to measure for the Angelina. (it fits a little differently)

Empire waists on Plus size dresses

A comment popped up on our survey that a customer thought our waistbands fit too high on our dresses. This is especially true for our plus sizes, and yes, our empire waists do fit high on purpose. Our regular dresses fit a little high on the waist also, but the Plus sizes are more so. We make our dresses with empire waists for a very good reason and so I’d like to explain why we do it.

WaistBandsHigher_Title
If you really look at a plus size body, the majority of women have the the smallest part of their torso right under their bust. Now of course this isn’t true for everyone. If you’ve never had a baby your natural (real) waistline might still be smaller. But for most of us, this is the smallest part by measurement.  The smallest circumference is also the right at the top of your stomach where it extends the least. Yep…we’re talking about my least favorite body part here  …the tummy. If you stand naked in the mirror and look straight forward you may notice it’s the smallest width. Then if you stand looking at your side, again you’ll maybe notice that your tummy narrows right under your bustline. I find a higher waist to be the most slimming place for a plus size waistband.

So, the reason that we make the empire waists high is because it’s the most flattering. It also fits many body shapes as well as heights. So if you’re short like me (5’2″), it will fit and if you’re tall like many of our models, it will still fit. The other big advantage of a high waist is it gives you more fabric and more room across the tummy (especially on the full skirted styles). So if you’re like me and your tummy is not your favorite body part, the higher waist may be just the ticket for you.

Empire Waists - Waist Sizing Diagram
If you’ve ever had the impression that Cherry Velvet plus size dresses only fit women with perfect hourglass figures, you’d be wrong. Actually they are mainly designed with both apple shaped (bigger in the tummy) and pear shaped (bigger in the hips). While they are definitely also designed for women with boobs, we know not all plus size women have big boobs. Generally speaking if you have a pear figure and smaller boobs our dresses will still fit if you choose a dress with a full skirt and go down a size so that the bodice will also fit.

If you’ve read our blog posts before, you’ll know fit is hugely important to our brand and making dress that fit ‘you’ is of utmost importance. Don’t settle for mediocre fit…. you deserve a dress that fits well!
