The Secret Life of a Cherry Velvet Girl

Hey there! My name is Danielle and by day I’m Cherry Velvet’s Sales & Marketing Coordinator. I’m who responds to your social media inquiries and comments! But, I’m going to let you in on a secret…. on weekends & evenings I love to indulge my alternate pin-up persona… Miss Lucky Dee!!

When did you first gain an interest in modeling? When did you get your start?

When I was a teenager I always thought it would be fun to be a model but assumed I couldn’t because I’m a size 14.  Then last year I won a modeling competition for the plus size store {LUCY} Clothing in Langley and it all started from there.

How did you come up with your stage name?

I only just picked my stage name the other day!  My good friend Rory suggested it and immediately I liked it.

Who are your style inspirations?

I love Zooey Deschanel’s style.  She is always wearing super cute and quirky pieces and I like how she doesn’t over accessorize.

What would people find unexpected about you?

I’m seriously afraid of seagulls.

How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?

I shave, pluck, wax and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!  Basically a lot of hair removal!! Haha.   No booze the night before either.

Do you have any secret beauty tips?

I use a a vitamin C moisturizer on my face and I comb my eyebrows every morning (lol).

What was your favorite outfit from this shoot?

The fuchsia Annette dress!! I can’t wait to buy it.

What’s your favorite outfit from your own closet?

My Kiyonna Betsey Ruched dress is one of my favorites to wear out.  But, my guilty pleasure is a pair of stretchy grey shorts I’ve had for 10 years.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I can juggle and blow smoke rings….are those talents?!

What’s your favorite movie?

Hands down it’s Best In Show

Five things you can’t live without?

My family, friends, pets (black cat Hendrix & schnoodle pup Stella), iPhone & mascara – in that order.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Mussels with fries & wine… Yumm!

How did you come up with your stage name?

I have always loved the name and character Elly May Clampette from the Beverly Hillbillies (I wanted to be her). The Mayday part comes from my career as a flight attendant. The name is cute and it holds a little bit of meaning to my life.

What would people find unexpected about you?

I was born and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, so I am not as girly as I may look.

What is your background in modeling? When and why did you get started?

I entered a competition for a calendar in the summer of 2009 and from then on I’ve been interested in any opportunity that has come my way.  I got into it because people encouraged me and I had people saying I reminded them of some pretty famous ladies (Marilyn Jayne Mansfield, Anna Nicole Smith). It was nice that people appreciated my curves. I began to embrace my look and have been busier and happier ever since.

How would you describe your personal style? Where do you generally shop?

My personal style is best described as cute but different. I don’t ever want to blend in!!  I go for things that extenuate my best features. I love wearing a cute skirt and heels but throwing in suspenders and an older looking white button down shirt. Thrift stores are my go to for cool finds! I would probably like your grandpa’s style.

How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?

Know your product, get lots of rest, come with extra shoes/undergarments, and listen to my favorite music.

Do you have any secret beauty tips?

Less is more. Make up is to enhance, not cover up your beauty.

What was your favorite outfit from this shoot?

I loved the fuchsia Annette dress! It’s great if you have a smaller waist and bigger hips. A simple black belt ties it all together really well.

What’s your favorite outfit from your own closet?

I have a black Bettie Page dress from Las Vegas that I adore! It was the first real pin up outfit I ever bought. I’ve been hooked on this style of clothing since.

What’s your favorite movie?

Stepbrothers

Five things you can’t live without?

  • music
  • the people I love
  • my career as a flight attendant
  • my hot curlers
  • popcorn

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I could eat steak, potatoes and caesar salad for the rest of my life.

Tuesday Talk: Getting to Know Ruby Roxx

After our Save-on-Meats photo shoot last week I had a chance to catch up with our models.  I learned a lot about everyone and we giggled a lot!  My second interview was with the notorious pin-up model Ruby Roxx.  You may recognize her from the latest cover of Delicious Dolls Magazine!

Who are your style inspirations?

Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, Katy Perry and my Grandma.

How did you come up with your stage name?

I wanted a name that reflected my signature red hair.  I also wanted something that had a vintage ring to it, but wasn’t too cutesy so I could also explore other genres of modeling, while still using my stage name.

What would people find unexpected about you?

I teach Preschool when I’m not modeling.

What is your background in modeling?  When and why did you get started?

I have been modeling about 5 years.  I started as a favor to a friend who was a hairdresser.  She did my hair and I posed for her salon.  After that I was hooked.

How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?

Get lots of sleep, make sure I’m well fed, hydrated, moisturized and always wearing the proper undergarments.

Do you have any secret beauty tips?

Sleep, sleep and more sleep!  I take a bath with baby oil almost nightly, and always moisturize when I get out.

What was your favorite outfit from this shoot?

I loved all the looks!!! The floral Sabrina Dress from the new spring line was one of my favorites though!

What’s your favorite outfit from your own closet?

I have a vintage 1940’s dress from Australia. Its looks just like Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress, only its Emerald Green (my favourite colour). I hardly ever wear it though because it’s so delicate.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I’m a great cook!!!  I cooked professionally for years.  I also throw one hell of a party!!

Five things you can’t live without?

  • my family
  • my friends

Spring is just around the corner…

I’ve never been good with surprises.  That’s probably why I am having such a hard time keeping our Cherry Velvet Spring collection under wraps!  Last night we had a fabulous photo shoot and I am dying to talk about.

We had the super talented Chevvy Piston and Stevie Lix at our design studio transforming our already stunning models into sexy pin up princesses.  They sculpted our models’ hair into masterpieces and the make-up was to die for.  I’ve always been a sucker for big red lips and fake eye lashes!

Finding Wide Calf Boots

It’s that time of year again!  If you’re a Canadian girl like me you’re probably bundling up everyday to fight against the winter weather.  Well, what better excuse is there to invest in some great boots?  I mean you don’t want to catch a cold from having chilly, wet feet.

winter boots 1

I like to invest in a new pair of boots every winter and believe me I know just how difficult it can be to find cute boots that fit a wider calf.  Not long ago, I fell in love with some gorgeous black knee-high boots and despite my valiant effort, they simply wouldn’t fit.  I was so disappointed!

So, I’m sharing with you some of my favorite sites for wide calf boots.  Happy shopping ladies!

1.  Miz Mooz www.miz-mooz.com

Miz Mooz began as a small, New York based, private label, but quickly gained notoriety.  They remain committed to the principal that fashion and comfort can happily coexist.  Their shoes are eclectic, edgy, playful & quirky. Most importantly, they have options for wide calves!
